December - The bees are in a tight cluster, bundled together for warmth as the chilly air of winter surrounds them. They will only leave the hive to take cleansing flights during those rare warm and sunny days that break through the cold spell. Naturally dying bees will pile up at the front of the hive if it warms up enough for other living bees to muster the energy to carry them outside. This cycle of life and death is a stark reminder of the struggles these industrious little creatures face in the harshness of winter, yet their resilience is incredibly inspiring. The hive remains their sanctuary, a place of safety where they can survive the frost and cold until the promise of spring brings new life and renewed activity for the colony.
